A sapiosexual is someone who is attracted to or aroused by intelligence in others. Typically, this definition has been said to solely apply to academic intelligence. While some might argue that being a sapiosexual is rooted in elitism, when you consider that there is more than one type of intelligence. In other words, intelligence isn’t limited to book smarts and so formal education doesn’t necessarily have to be a part of the equation in the first place. There are actually multiple intelligences a person can be attracted to: book intelligence, emotional intelligence, intuitive intelligence, street smarts, and erotic intelligence. You might just be a sapiosexual and don’t know it!
Book Intelligence: This is the traditional definition of sapiosexual. Those with book smarts are the ones who have the knowledge base to stand up in front of a crowd of people and talk for an hour about their area of expertise. They’re passionate about their intellectual pursuits and tend not to be shy about sharing it with others.
Emotional Intelligence: A person who has emotional intelligence is incredibly self-aware, understanding not just their own emotions but the emotions of people around them. They tend to be sensitive, having expertise both in their own emotional regulation and empathy for themselves and others. Vulnerability comes easy to them as well as holding space for others in their vulnerability.
Intuitive Intelligence: These are the people who just know things. They can read the energy of a room. They seem to know what you need before you ask for it. You can’t lie to or attempt to in any way deceive an intuitive person; they can detect an untruth before the words have even been spoken. Those guided by intuition have a deep sense for any type of incongruence that may be occurring for another even when that person isn’t aware of that incongruence in themselves.
Street Smarts: People who are considered “street smart” tend to have a working knowledge of the human psyche, particularly the less savory parts. These are the people who tend to have multiple PhDs in the school of life. They tend to be highly charismatic, know how to work a room, are in their element when being social and are great at connecting with others. Extroversion isn’t a requirement for street smarts; a more introverted person who is considered street smart could be the type of person who observes others and notices everything about what a person says as well as what is communicated without words such as body language and subtle facial expressions.
Erotic Intelligence: Those who have erotic intelligence are what steamy romance novels are made of! These are the humans who ooze erotic energy.
